New Advanced Segmentation Features with Attributes and Demographic Data

Just a month ago, we at Userlane, announced our advanced segmentation feature.

In a nutshell, through advanced segmentation, Userlane managers (users who are responsible for creating interactive guides with Userlane) can decide to show specific interactive guides only to certain groups of users based on behavioral data collected within the application.

This feature was extremely well received since it was the first step towards full advanced segmentation that can be used to tailor the in-app experience for different user segments.

Now, just a couple months after this big announcement, we’re proud to reveal our newest feature release which now incorporates custom data management for advanced user segmentation.

Our first segmentation release was meant to improve usability with very easy segmentation, simplified allocation, and a great overview of different segments and their interactive walkthroughs.

Now, we focus on custom data which can be managed and structured from the dashboard to introduce unlimited new targeting options.
With this new release, it is now possible to create uniquely tailored journeys for the end users with targeted walkthroughs and onboarding tours that take into account both behavioral and custom demographic data.


What is Advanced Segmentation?

With our previous release, Userlane managers had the option to create user segments on the basis of behavioral data they collected within the product itself.

This was important since specific walkthroughs are often only relevant for newer users or users who are more or less active in the application.

Now, Userlane managers can add custom attributes and create segments on the basis of these newly created attributes.

Custom Attributes can now be used to filter users


This way, it is possible to create user segments based on both behavioral data (collected within the product) and custom demographic data connected to the attributes.

Finally, the Userlane manager can associate different interactive guides and walkthroughs to each single segment.


Who is it designed for?

Right now, customized segmentation only works for SaaS companies that implement Userlane using our code snippet (although we’re planning to extend access to this feature to our customers who implement Userlane via browser extension very soon).

By using our advanced segmentation features, our customers can now create different onboarding tours and interactive guides for different users based on custom demographic data.

Specific end users might have access to different product features based on their account settings. At the same time, users might need specific walkthroughs based on their stage in the customer journey or account type.

Being able to create custom attributes allows our customers to design tailored product tours and walkthroughs to personalize the user experience and create a truly customized product discovery journeys while offering tailored performance support.


How does it work?

Userlane managers can create attributes in the new ‘attributes’ menu of the user management section of the dashboard. Such information can be categorized as plain text, number, array, and other data formats.

These custom attributes will then appear in the profile of each user.

Segments can then be created by filtering users with logic operators that apply to the custom demographic data connected to the attributes.

Once a segment is created the Userlane manager can then decide to show or hide specific Userlane interactive guides for the users who are part of such segment.

As usual, the Userlane manager can see in real time how many users end up in the segment after creating it.

Long story short:

  1. Create a custom attribute for demographic data
  2. Filter users using the newly created attribute and a selection of smart operators
  3. Create a segment
  4. Assign/hide interactive guides to that segment
  5. Celebrate!

Why is it important?

Personalization is one of the key differentiators of a great user experience.
